Food during holiday time
The holidays are one of the most special times of the year, and they should be celebrated with food! There is no wrong way to do this. In fact, it’s traditional to have both a Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas and New year dinner during the holiday season. For those who don’t celebrate either, you can still enjoy some great dishes! like international and continental recipes that will take your taste buds around the world in just a few bites. Baking, braai, desserts, and of course traditional homemade foods where you will find me all year round.
Nutritional values, healthy food
Why do we need food?
First, eat food to fuel your body. Your body is an engine that runs on glucose. Glucose comes from carbohydrates and fat, but if you do not get enough of it, your body will burn its own stores of protein for energy. This process can damage your muscles and organs. The more active you are, the more calories you need to eat every day to maintain a healthy weight.
A few weeks ago I was chatting with my girls about pap meal, pap is widely eaten here both in southern and eastern African, is what west Africa calls eba /swallow. it’s a stable food from cassava, sorghum, or maize. I love to swallow with different touches of vegetables, soups, and greens. though pap is being chewed not swallowed straight up. We ended up sharing different ways pap is being prepared, seems here in Namibia there are not many varieties unlike in South Africa where you find peanut butter, cheese, butter, etc are used in pimping up paps. I learned that plain paps are the Bantu way (Bantu people are speakers of Bantu languages, comprising several hundred indigenous ethnic groups in Africa) and this excludes Xhosa’s and Damaras, any click languages. personally, I found it very fascinating and Nutritional to add sweetcorn, peanut butter, sour milk, full cream, sugar, omaere, etc, but my girls argued that they cant picture “a sweet pap” going down well with a good portion of juicy well-cooked meat, chicken or fish LOL, I concur partially but Variety they say is the spice of life. I am very sure either way, sweet or plain pap it will go down well with any recipe with me, just make sure it’s a well-prepared food.
1) “Food is essential to life, therefore it is also essential to our culture. Food is a vital part of who we are, how we live, and how we relate to each other. Food culture is a language, a vocabulary, and an idiom that we use to express ourselves, to speak with each other, and to fuse ideas and opinions. Food culture is dynamic and it is constantly evolving.”
2) “Traditional food should not be eaten the same way every day. Like our lifestyle, food is always an alternative. Sometimes you eat to live, sometimes you live to eat.”
3) “There are 5 elements that are present in a traditional recipe: meat, fish, vegetable, salt, and grain. Further, every traditional recipe is categorized by origin, ingredients, and cultural history.”
